What to Buy and What to Skip in April

Spring is here, and with it, comes some sizzling hot deals! While April may not have any major shopping holidays, you can still find some great deals this month. Here’s what to buy and what to skip in April.

Buy: Cruise Tickets

Have you always dreamed of an exotic cruise but held back from booking your tickets because of nightmarish prices? Your dreams may just come true this month! April is a fantastic time to book a spring or summer cruise to exotic locations like Alaska or the Caribbean Islands. Take advantage of the discounted prices and score the vacation of a lifetime.

Skip: Mattresses

Looking to spring for a new mattress? Unless your current one is causing you unbearable back pain, you’re better off waiting to purchase a new one. May and September are the best months for mattress sales, so wait just a bit longer to score the best deal.

Buy: Winter Wear

April is an excellent time to snag some deals on warm weather wear. Stores are starting to clear out their winter inventory to make room for the new season’s merchandise. Look for discounts on items like cozy sweaters, coats, boots, hats and more to get a head start on next winter’s wardrobe.

Skip: Electronics

If you're in the market for a new TV or computer, it's best to wait until later in the year. Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer the best deals on electronics. Amazon Prime Day in July also has some excellent discounts.

Buy: Car Parts and Accessories

Does your car need some TLC? You can pick up new wipers, tires, brakes and lots of other car parts and accessories at discounted prices this month.  April is National Car Care Month, so auto parts stores and service centers will be running promotions. If your car needs servicing, you can get this done for less this month, too.

Skip: Grills and Patio Furniture

While you might be dreaming of summer barbecues, it's better to wait until later in the season to purchase grills and BBQ accessories. Spring is just getting started, and all things outdoors are still retailing at full price in April. Stores will have more stock, and you'll likely find better deals in June or July as they try to clear out inventory. If you can wait until Memorial Day sale events, you can upgrade your grill and deck out your patio for a lot less money. If you wait even longer, until July or August, you’ll likely find even steeper discounts.

Buy: Secondhand treasures

‘Tis the season to purge! And all that spring-cleaning means people are emptying their closets of once-loved clothing and their homes of gently-used furniture. Secondhand stores tend to offer a robust selection in the spring, all thanks to this sudden inventory. Take advantage of this opportunity by checking out local secondhand stores this month for priceless pre-owned treasures. Try to get there early in the week for the best pickings, since donations are most often made over the weekend.

Skip: Vacuums

April may be time for deep-cleaning, but that doesn’t mean cleaning gear is discounted this month. Unless you’re desperate for a new machine, you’re better off waiting until vacuums go on sale during Black Friday sale events.

Buy: Tax software

With the tax deadline approaching, you can find some great deals on tax software in April. Look for discounts on programs like TurboTax or H&R Block to save money on filing your taxes.

April may not have any major shopping holidays, but that doesn't mean you can't find some great deals. By knowing what to buy and what to skip, you can shop smart and save money. Use this guide to help you make informed purchases this month, and get ready for summer!
